Reflections of Her Journey
Mrs. Joyce Bowen was born on August 23, 1940, in East St. Louis, Illinois to the union of James E. Truitt and Geneva Triplett. She was the youngest of three siblings.
Joyce's strong faith in Christ guided her throughout her life. She was baptized by Father Taylor at St. Augustine Catholic Church. The family later converted to Baptist and joined New Hope Baptist Church for many years under the pastorate of Reverend Alexander. In her adult years, she was a member of Coleman Wright CME Church and later joined West Side Missionary Baptist Church under Reverend Ronald L. Bobo. She was actively involved in the Health Unit and served alongside Deacon Carrington with her CNC.
Educated in East St. Louis, Joyce graduated from Lincoln Senior High School and pursued further education at SIUE. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and worked at St. Mary’s Hospital. Joyce maintained her LPN license, always embracing the motto, "You Never Know."
Her professional career led her to the Federal Government Department of Defense as a Computer Specialist, where she met her beloved husband, Roland. Joyce also served as the Black Employment Program Manager, advocating for equality and diversity in the workforce. After 33 years of dedicated service, she retired from the Federal Government.
Joyce had a passion for travel and exploring new places. She cherished moments spent with her husband Roland, her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Her adventurous spirit led her to visit various destinations, from cruises to road trips across the country. At times, she would casually suggest, "Let's just go pick a place." She traveled frequently, often taking three to four trips a year. She preferred not to share living spaces with others and insisted on having her own hotel room. When it came to transportation, she would often remark, "Been there, done that once, and never again," as a way to ensure she was in control of her preferences. It is believed that she has visited every state in the U.S.
Joyce was preceded in death by both her parents; her sister, Patricia Truitt Mitchell; and her loving husband, Roland Bowen.
She is survived by her daughter, Ronya Joyce; grandchildren Aryah Joyce and Aveyon Roland; one great-grandchild, Autymn J’aryah; brother James Truitt Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
