Reflections of Her Journey
Rita Murial Taliaferro
Rita was born in Sealy, Texas. She was the youngest of nine children born to Osie and Austin Burditt. She had seven brothers and one sister. She followed her older sister, Maxine Burditt Thomas, to St. Louis, MO, where she met her husband, John Taliaferro. She had one son, John, who preceded her in death.
Rita stated that the best moments of her life were the birth of her son, John and graduating Magna Cum Laude from Prairie View College in Prairie View, Texas.
Rita accepted Christ as her Savior when she was a young girl attending a revival at her childhood church. She said it was during a session for young kids that she accepted Christ and shared that her relationship with God grew closer and closer as she got older. Rita joined Christ Our Redeemer AME Church and was involved in several activities at church which included becoming a member of the Celebration Choir, the Lay Organization, the Trustees, Women’s Missionary Society, and finally, the Christian Out-Reach in Faith ministry. Rita said being a Christian had influenced her life by helping her to be more forgiving and non-judgmental. She also stated that being a Christian kept her from allowing things to bother her like she thinks they would if she were not a Christian.
Rita is survived by her daughter-in-law, Lori Niemann; three granddaughters; Aliyah, Kylie, and Brianna Taliaferro; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
